We started as SGM Alliance. We became SGMA.
Before there were standards, there was a problem nobody was naming correctly. Outdated language from the 1990s was being copied and pasted into clinical research documents — language that excluded people living with HIV from studies for cancer, diabetes, and other conditions that had nothing to do with HIV. It wasn’t a policy debate. It was a methodology failure with real consequences for real people.
SGMA was founded to fix it. What began as a founding declaration became a standards program. What began as a collaboration of concerned researchers became a governance architecture the field can cite and build on.

In 2025, SGMA presented the Kigali Manifesto on the Inclusion of People Living with HIV in Clinical Research and Healthcare at IAS. It is the document that named the problem. Our standards are the infrastructure built to solve it.
